[Profile Korean Singer] Han Geng (traditional Chinese: 韓庚; simplified Chinese: 韩庚; pinyin: Hán Gēng) Super Junior
Han Geng (traditional Chinese: 韓庚; simplified Chinese: 韩庚; pinyin: Hán Gēng) was born on 9 February 1984. He is a Mainland Chinese Mandopop artist and actor well-known for his powerful dance skills. He is skillful in all China’s 56 ethnic traditional dances, as well as ballet and hip-hop dance.
He has been dubbed “Dancing King” and “King of Popularity” in China. He started his career, in 2001, when he was chosen by SM Entertainment (SME) to become a member of South Korean boy band Super Junior, which debuted in 2005, and as the leader of its sub-group Super Junior-M in 2008.
On 21 December 2009, Han filed a lawsuit against SME to terminate his contract as he felt that the 13-year contract was unlawful and overly restrictive; and has since returned to China to pursue a solo career. On 21 December 2010 the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of Han, however a representative of SM Entertainment said that they will file an immediate appeal to reverse the decision SM Entertainment have yet to release statements regarding his official status with them.
For his various contributions to the spread of Chinese culture, Han was chosen as a torch bearer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, becoming the first boy band member in history to hold this role.
Han Geng, an ethnic Nanai from Northeast China, was born in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang, China. He attended Guang Hua Elementary School from 1990 to 1996.
Han Geng started to learn dancing since he was young. By the age of 12, he was accepted into the dance department of the Central University for Nationalities. He left his family and his hometown in the Northeastern part of China to attend dance school in Beijing. During his years in the school, he mastered all 56 types of Chinese traditional dances from the 56 Chinese ethnic groups.
In December 2001, South Korea’s biggest Entertainment Agency, SM Entertainment, went to China to hold an audition in Beijing with hopes of finding new talents in the country. The audition was called H.O.T. CHINA Audition Casting. Han Geng, who was preparing for his graduation performance at the Central University for Nationalities, immediately caught the attention of the agency’s talent scouts and was invited to participate in the audition, but he wasn’t very interested as he never heard of the company before. One of his friends, however, was very interested and persuaded Han Geng in accompanying him to the audition. Although hesitant at first, Han agreed to audition with his friend. The competition rate was 3,000 to 1, and Han had no hopes of getting selected after auditions ended. Sumber : Wikipedia
Kim Hee-chul (born July 10, 1983), sometimes mononymously credited as Heechul, is a Korean pop singer, actor, presenter, disc jockey and a member of the popular 13-member boy band Super Junior.
He was discovered at Starlight Casting System October 2002 where he joined the auditions on a whim with his friends. Even though he was late because of unfamiliar places, he still passed the audition because of his dance. Initially, Heechul was placed in a four-member project group called, “Four Seasons.” This group included other members Jaejoong, Yunho, and Kangin. The prospective group never came through though as both Jaejoong and Yunho were chosen to join another all-male singing group, TVXQ, which debuted in December 2003.
With two members gone, the idea of Four Seasons dropped. Heechul and Kangin were then placed in Super Junior along with ten other trainees under the same company. This project group managed through well and debuted two years later on November 6, 2005 under the name Super Junior 05, the first generation of Super Junior. The initial plan for this group is that members would be continuously cycled in and then fazed out into other projects.
Other activities of Heechul before his official debut include modeling, acting, and VJing. He made his first appearance on TV starring in the teen drama “Banolim 2”.
On November 6, 2005, Kim Heechul officially debuted as part of Super Junior 05 on SBS “Inkingayo,” performing the group’s first single “TWINS (Knock Out)”. The group was supposed to comprise the first generation of Super Junior. In early 2006, SM Entertainment was beginning to recruit new members for the next Super Junior generation, Super Junior 06, where Heechul would still be an undergraduate member. However, plans changed. The company decided to add a thirteenth member, Kyuhyun, and declared a halt in forming future Super Junior generations. The group dropped the suffix “05″ and became officially credited as Super Junior. Sumber : Wikipedia
Park Jung-su(박정수)(born July 1, 1983), better known by his stage name Leeteuk(이특), is a Korean pop singer, presenter, and occasional actor. He is the leader of the super boy band Super Junior. To prevent confusion with famous Korean veteran actress Park Jeong-su, he decided to use the name ‘Leeteuk’. His stage name literally means “special”.
When Leeteuk and his older sister, Park In-young, traveled to Myeongdong for a holiday in early 2000, he was recommended by a talent scout to audition for SM Entertainment’s Starlight Casting System, an audition that selects artists to sign under their label.
After several test recordings and performances, he signed into SM Entertainment and became the company’s trainee. That same year, he had his first quick television appearance as an extra in the MBC Korean drama All About Eve, and appeared as a brief model for Pepsi in 2002.
In 2003, Leeteuk was put into a five-member boyband with future bandmate Donghae, but the project was quickly dropped. They were then put into the large rotational group Super Junior along with ten other boys. Older than the other trainees, Leeteuk became the leader of the group.
On November 6, 2005, Leeteuk officially debuted on SBS’s Popular Songs music program as a member of Super Junior 05, the first generation of Super Junior. The group performed their first single “TWINS (Knock Out)” to an audience of about 500 fans.
Leeteuk explained that he uses a stage name due to his desire to have a name with the same effects as Kangta (and to also prevent confusion with veteran actress Park Jeong-su). His stage name denotes being “special” as he wants to be a special member in the group.
Leeteuk also became known as the “special leader” (특별한리더) of the group. Not only becoming a “special leader”, but also having a sweet voice as a tenor of Super Junior. He is also noted for having a unique and goofy laugh. Sumber : Wikipedia
Super Junior (Korean: 슈퍼주니어), often referred to as SJ or SuJu (슈주), is a popular boy band from South Korea formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2005. The group debuted with 12 members:
1. Leeteuk (Leader),
3. Han Geng,
and later added at 13th member named Kyuhyun;
they are one of the largest boy bands in the world. As of 2010, 10 members are active, due to Han Geng’s lawsuit with SM Entertainment, Kangin’s leave of absence for mandatory military service and Kibum’s pursuit of an acting career. However, the other members have insisted that the three are still part of the group. SM Entertainment have yet to release statements regarding their official status with the group.
Super Junior has released and contributed in 20 different kinds of records with varying degrees of success. Over the years, they have been divided into smaller sub groups, simultaneously targeting different music industries and audiences. Largely due to Super Junior’s success as entertainers, other Korean entertainment managements began to train their music groups in other areas of entertainment, such as acting and hosting. In addition to their commercial success, Super Junior has earned seven music awards from the M.net Asian Music Awards, eleven from the Golden Disk Awards, and is the second singing group to win Favorite Artist Korea at the 2008 MTV Asia Awards after JTL in 2003.
As a whole, Super Junior has released four studio albums and one physical single, including occasional contributions to drama soundtracks. They are acclaimed for their vocal harmonization and unison as each member contributes a different position range in their music. Some members are credited for their vocal belting techniques.
Super Junior works closely with Young Jin Yoo, who has produced and arranged most of the group’s promotional singles since debut. Yoo’s also known for creating the renowned SMP style, a genre that includes a balanced infusion of rock, R&B, and rap, with complementing musical elements such as the electric guitar, bass, and other different percussion instruments. Super Junior has prominently used this SMP style in Don’t Don.
Super Junior has covered a few songs in their albums. Their debut single “TWINS (Knock Out)” is a cover of Triple Eight’s “Knockout,” which was released in 2003. While the musical style is mostly maintained as the original, “TWINS (Knock Out)” touches closer to rap rock, with quicker rap and more emphasis on the bass. In most of their covers, the original titles are kept. Examples include Cape’s “L.O.V.E” and Exile’s “Believe.” However, most of these covers are re-arranged to different accompaniments, such as H.O.T’s “Full of Happiness”.
Since debut, SM Entertainment has created four subgroups for Super Junior. Every member was put into different subgroups excluding Kibum, due to his busy acting schedule. The intentions of the subgroups were part of SM’s strategy to not limit Super Junior’s activities, and the goal was to show that the group could accommodate different musical genres. However, this strategy was later challenged by critics, as it has influenced an overwhelming amount of music groups to create official and unofficial subgroups alike. SM announced that Super Junior will form more subgroups in the future, and possible focuses of these subgroups include a variety of genres such as electropop, rock and hip hop.Previous Super Junior subgroups will also return to the industry along with appearances of new subgroups. Big Bang (Korean: 빅뱅), commonly stylized as BIGBANG, is a South Korean boy band. The group’s formation was chronicled on the television series Big Bang Documentary, from July to August 2006. The show was also aired online on GomTV and on MTV Korea. Initially a six-member group, one member, Jang Hyunseung (now a member of BEAST), got eliminated during the airing of the show before the official debut leading to their current line-up.
Signed to YG Entertainment, Big Bang released several successful singles and EPs. Their first release, the EP Always (2007), spawned the number-one single “Lies” (Korean: 거짓말; Revised Romanization: Geojitmal). The follow-up EPs Hot Issue and Stand Up were similarly successful. After they received the “Artist of the Year” award from the M.net KM Music Festival and the Seoul Gayo Daesang Award, the group expanded their activities into Japan, releasing mini-albums and airplay singles. Their materials would not receive major promotion until the following year with the release of their first physical Japanese single, “My Heaven”.
By the end of 2009, Big Bang became the most searched artist in South Korea. They also became the first foreign group in Japan to receive the Japan Cable Broadcasting Award for “Best Newcomer”, and the first from Korea to receive the Japan Records award. In recent years, the members have branched out to do solo activities: Taeyang and G-Dragon have released solo materials while T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri have started acting.
During the early days of their career, Big Bang’s music was predominately hip hop, although they incorporated R&B songs into their albums as well. A writer for Yahoo! Japan once compared their early materials to that of American hip-hop artists such as the Black-Eyed Peas, stating that their material included “catchy vocals, rap and characters”. Always was noted for its change of musical styles from their previous efforts, with the group experimenting with electronic music and setting it as the new music trend in Korea. G-Dragon later stated that they hoped “to reach even more fans” with the new direction. In 2008, they recorded “Oh My Friend”, a rock-based song, with the Korean rock-band No Brain. In an interview, the group also expressed interests in covering the music genre trot.
Members of the band have branched out to other styles for solo projects, thus the group has been described as “rich in variety” for their fans. Taeyang’s mini-album, Hot, was mainly a collection of R&B songs, with the singer stating that the genre was his “main focus”. Daesung’s first digital single, “Look at Me, GwiSun” (Korean: 날 봐, 귀순), was a trot song, which drew criticisms due to Big Bang’s image as “hip-hop artists”. For his debut album, Heartbreaker, G-Dragon incorporated a mix of dance, hip-hop, and R&B songs.
Following the release of Always, G-Dragon began involving himself with the production of the group’s materials, penning the lyrics and composing the songs “Lie”, “Last Farewell”, and “Day By Day”. His involvement was praised by the Korea Times, who described him as a “genius singer-songwriter”. G-Dragon himself described the group as “an idol group not born of talent but through effort”.A writer for Yahoo! Japan complimented the group for their involvement in their work, stating that “perhaps by [each of the members’] contributing to their own materials, not only do they become in sync with one another, but each person’s personality stands out.”
Big Bang is choreographed by Shaun Evaristo. While they once relied heavily on street dancing for their moves, Big Bang have made a transition towards more choreography. Their dance moves have been widely copied and covered. One of the moves, which incorporates the group lifting their shirts to expose their abdomens, quickly gained popularity online and became one of the top searches on the internet.Another one, in which the group incorporates the idea of “jump roping” as a dance move, also gained attention from fans.
Big Bang has received both praise and criticism. Time magazine described them as one of the “most promising” South Korean acts to venture into Japan, while the Korea Times called them “the icons of Korean pop [music]”. Bill Lamb of About.com also list them as one of the “top 10 Asian boy bands”. Their contribution to their materials early in their career, most notably by G-Dragon, has garnered praises; singer Baek Jiyoung has state that she “like[s] idol singers if they are like Big Bang”.However, the group has been criticized for their over-use of electronic music in their materials.
Citing the longest-running boy band in South Korea, Shinhwa as their influence and role model,Big Bang’s own influence extends beyond the music industry, shaping major trends in the fashion industry. Dubbed as “Big Bang fashion”, their style has gained a following throughout Asia. The group first adopted the “hip-hop” image concept for their debut. The release of Always in 2007 was accompanied by a change in image, with the group leaning towards a more preppy-punk style, including skinny jeans with Converse or high-top sneakers which became a still ongoing trend in South Korea. Taeyang also traded his cornrows for a faux hawk. Seen wearing brands such as Bape, 10 deep, Louis Vuitton, Jeremy Scott, and Phenomenon, Big Bang also wear custom printed hoodies for many of their performances and music videos. They were also credited for bringing back “old school” fashion into the mainstream, such as Nike and Reebok high-top shoes.Described as the “most fashionable” one in the group, G-Dragon is known to sport triangular scarves that were later nicknamed “Big Bang scarves”.T.O.P also gained a following for wearing sunglasses during performances. The clothes that the members donned on stage have gained a cult among their fans and are sold in boutique stores such as DongDaeMun. In 2011, Big Bang collaborated with Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo to create t-shirts in promotion of their Japanese comeback. It was reported that the items were “sold out within 15 minutes of the store’s opening.”
The group’s popularity and success have led to endorsement deals. Big Bang have been endorsing Fila products since 2006, as well as the Korean online FPS video game Sudden Attack. Other products and/or label that the group have been affiliated with is Baskin Robbin’s, Skoolooks, LG CYON, and NII among others. In 2011, along with their label management, Big Bang teamed up with Nikon for the campaign, A Shot A Day, where daily pictures of the group were be taken and released in episodic format online. The group also released their own fragrance, “BB Bud’s My First Fragrance” (Korean: 나의 첫번째 향기), in early 2007. In 2009, they released their autobiography book Shouting to the World, which became a best-seller.
Big Bang influenced the creation of the Chinese boy band OkBang, who were described as having “many similarities to Big Bang in terms of musical style, wardrobe and hairstyles”.In 2010, the group’s Big Show concert was chosen by the South Korean Touristic Committee for their Visit Korea from 2010—2012 campaign, stating that they will “have a big economic impact on the country”. Ok Taec-Yeon (born December 27, 1988), generally known as Taecyeon, is a member in the Korean boy band 2PM, where he’s mainly responsible for the rapping parts. In 2010, Taecyeon gave his debut as an actor in the Korean drama Cinderella’s Sister.
Taecyeon was born in Seoul, South Korea, but emigrated with his family to Bedford, Massachusetts, where his parents and older sister still currently reside. Taecyeon himself lived there for seven years before returning to pursue his career in Korea. Taecyeon was educated at Gel In High School in Seoul and studied Business Administration at Dankook University.
It was his sister who persuaded him to participate in a JYP Entertainment-audition, whose promotion she had noticed when surfing on the internet. After his reluctant agreement to participate, both headed for New York City on his 17th birthday. A week later, he was chosen for the final 35 and finally got the call-back to go to Korea for the further competition. At first, Taecyeon applied to become a model, but the judges suggested him to try to do dancing and singing. He eventually was named one of the dozen finalists (including his future bandmates Junho and Chansung) to compete in the show Superstar Survival, but was the first contestant to leave the show.
In 2008, he took part in Mnet’s Hot Blood Men which follows the extreme training of 13 trainees in order to become a member of the boy band One Day. One Day spawned two boy bands, 2AM and 2PM, of which the latter one Taecyeon became a member of. Six months after Hot Blood was aired on TV, 2PM debuted with their first single “10점 만점에 10점” (“10 Points out of 10 Points”) from their first EP Hottest Time of the Day, but it wasn’t until their second EP 2:00PM Time For Change which skyrocketed their success in the Korean music industry. So far, 2PM has released one studio album and two further EPs.
Taecyeon is featured in “Yes I’m In Love” by Bada on her fourth album and Baek Ji-Young’s 2009 song “내 귀에 캔디” (My Ear’s Candy). He formally hosted SBS’s music show Inkigayo with Wooyoung, and was a permanent cast member on Family Outing 2 before it got canceled.
In 2010, he saw his debut as an actor in the 2010 KBS drama series “신데렐라 언니” (“Cinderella’s Sister”) alongside Moon Geun Young and Chun Jung-myung. His second drama is Dream High, which he acted as Jinguk which premiered on January 3, 2011.
On December 9, 2010, a JYP Entertainment representative revealed that “Taecyeon would like to give up his American permanent residence visa, and recently on December 1st, he received his official confirmation for his permanent residence cancellation.”
Taecyeon has gotten a physical examination for drafting and received a physical body status sufficient enough to only enlist as public service personnel due to his poor vision and dislocated shoulder back in 2008. However, he is currently thinking of getting another physical examination in order to complete active military duties.
The JYP representative stated, “Taecyeon has voiced out thoughts of wanting to enter the military service. He submitted his documents on the 1st and is clear on his actions.” He went on to explain, “Now that Taecyeon wants to enter active duties, he recently received a re-examination. I think he was affected by the recent Yeonpyeong Island shelling, so we want to respect his decision.” He concluded that, “Since Taecyeon is still at a young age, he won’t be entering the military immediately. He is currently active as an actor as well as continuing his studies, so we still need to watch over him.”
On the February 7th, 2011 broadcast of KBS2TV’s “Yeo Yu Man Man,” Taecyeon shared his thoughts on his enlistment situation stating that he plans to get corrective eye surgery so he can enlist.
Taecyeon stands 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) and weighs 76 kg (170 lb; 12.0 st). He speaks English, Korean and Japanese. His hobbies include wakeboarding, skiing, listening to music and cooking. He believes in Christianity. Sumber : Wikipedia
